A frozen Sturgeon River running through St. Albert, AB, founded in 1861, was the venue for skating, hockey practices, and skill competitions sponsored by Kinsmen until Perron Street Arena opened in 1971. In 1984, Grant Leier, currently of Barton Leier Gallery in Nanaimo, BC, painted a mural of ducks, and the arena was fondly dubbed ‘Ducky Dome’. Mark Messier, Troy Murray and Jarome Iginla began their hockey careers here. When two arenas were built to accommodate a growing population, Ducky Dome was taken down in 1992, and with the help of Habitat for Humanity, materials were recycled and shipped to Mexico for construction of homes
