Artist Comments: West Coast ceremonial button blankets represent a 160-year-old aboriginal tradition that was influenced by goods introduced by 19th century traders.
The blankets were originally acquired from the Hudson’s Bay Company and decorated with buttons made from abalone or dentalium shells with a central crest typically portraying a symbol of the wearer's family heritage.
They are still made and worn today at potlatches, ceremonial dances, weddings and graduations.
