Artist Comments:The Coastal Natives believed the black bear had the mystical powers to heal and protect them. Often the bear head is carved on their totem poles. Surprisingly, the black bear can come in many colors. One rare species of the black bear is the white Kermode or spirit bear. Most of them are found around Terrace, B.C.; although one was photographed in Juneau, Alaska. It is interesting that a black bear can have two cubs and one could be white and the other black or brown. Kermodes can also have black, white or shades of brown cubs.
