The Dancer

Artist Comments: I have always been fascinated with other cultures and their traditional clothing, art, dance and music, and have long wished to try to portray their beauty in paint. Since the focus of this mural project was the West Coast, I decided to focus on the culture of the aboriginal people of the Bella Coola valley in which I live, the Nuxalk. I was recently invited to the Children's Potlach, and was given permission by the chief to photograph the dances and to use them in my art, for which I feel greatly honored. Photographs of the Mask Dances in particular are not usually permitted. So I offer to you my interpretation of one, which I have simply titled, "The Dancer".
