Artist Comments:
“Cigar was perhaps one of the most prolific thoroughbred racehorses in America in the 1990's. Despite not racing at two years old (which is when most of them begin their careers, aiming for the Triple Crown races) Cigar had a Hall of Fame career, becoming the first American rachehorse to win 16 races in a row since “Citation” and he became the all time leading money earner among North American thoroughbreds, with nearly $10 million in earnings. After being named Horse of the Year and Champion Older Horse, the opportunity of a lifetime arose – the Dubai World Cup – the world's richest horse race with a $5 million US purse. In 1996 he traveled over 6,000 miles to Dubai, and was the first horse to win the prestigious race (now an annual event) at the Nad Al Sheba racecourse by less than 1 length, becoming the world's richest racehourse. Inspired by Cigar's triumph in Dubai, this panel shows a reflection of the Nad Al Sheba racecourse in his eye – truly a great moment in thoroughbred racing history
