Ferruginous Hawk

Artist Comments:. Ferruginous hawk (from the Latin Ferrugo, meaning rust). The largest North American hawk, they occupy less than half their historic Canadian geographical range. Their breading habitat in Canada is now limited to the southern grassland regions of the Prairie provinces where they were once found as far north as Edmonton. The main threat to this raptor is the loss of grassland due to the encroachment by agriculture and the spread of trees and shrubs growing from the north. The government of Canada Species at Risk Act has designated the Ferruginous hawk as a species of special concern.
