Artist Comments: Very little is known about the golden toad. We had only just begun to study it in 1987 and by 1989, just three years later, it had vanished and is believed to be extinct. The most likely culprit? Global warming. This
brilliant little toad's habitat consisted of only 30 square miles in Costa Rica's Monteverde Rainforest Preserve. An area which was once perpetually shrouded in cloud cover, has seen El Nino and other global warming factors push the cloud cover up over the mountain. The lack of moisture and the lowest recorded rainfall levels made the toads susceptible to desiccation, disease, pollution, and ultraviolet radiation. Of the 50 species of amphibians that once inhabited the area 20 have disappeared.
